Ouro Preto is a city alive with great artistic and cultural fervour. Several events choose the city as a stage and take to the streets and various venues, bringing a diverse audience that delight in the city. In addition to current events and festivals that fill the city's calendar, traditions are kept in various traditional and religious festivals. For example, Our Lady of the Rosary and also the world-famous Holy Week are yearly events when the streets where the procession passes are carefully decorated.

Events such as Carnival, Winter Festival, Jazz Festival, among others CINEOP are already traditions held in the city every year and attract more participants to the beautiful Black Gold.

Semana da Inconfidência

In tribute to his fighting attitude and honesty during the Minos Conspiracy and the Brazilian push for independence, the city of Ouro Preto honors its main leader, Tiradentes, through a civil ceremony in the town square on April 21.

Semana Santa

Ouro Preto's Holy Week means experiencing a roadmap of art, faith and culture. A carpet of flowers is made as people walk more than two miles to connect the paroquias, Pilar and Antonio Dias.

Festa da Santa Cruz
Place: Antônio Dias - Ouro Preto  (01 May 2020 - 03 May 2020 )

The Feast of Santa Cruz, also known as the Peanut Festival, is held in Bridge Square and Antonio Dias de Marilia. The traditional festival brings together the residents of the neighborhood for a time of fellowship. The celebration takes place in June with festivals, stalls and a traditional bonfire. 

UFOP Week of Arts
Place: Ouro Preto - Several places in the city  (04 May 2020 - 12 May 2020 )

The event consists of the union between theatre, music, exhibitions and films, all distributed in different areas of the city of Ouro Preto. With a partnership between the students of Performing Arts and Music, the Federal University of Ouro Preto and the city council, Ouro Preto hosts each year the Week of the Arts. Arts Week offers the public workshops and lectures with the goal of integrating students UFOP with several other universities in the country, artists and community.

Festas Juninas
Place: Ouro Preto and the nearby districts  (01 Jun 2020 - 30 Jun 2020 )

Held in cities throughout Brazil, Ouro Preto can be no different when it comes to the June Festival. The event is celebrated in various parts of the city. The community gathers along with students at the Federal University of Ouro Preto and many visitors, all who take time to come to know the culture and art of the historic city. The festival features delicious foods and parades, in addition to the traditional bonfires and stalls.

Corpus Christi
Place: Ouro Preto - Historic Centre  (03 Jun 2020 )

Hundreds of faithful and tourists visit the city during Corpus Christi to take part in the holy festivities and traditions associated with the holiday. During Holy Week, the streets of Ouro Preto are lined with a beautiful carpet of flowers and sawdust, about 3 kilometres long, serving for the passage of the Blessed Sacrament. It is a great opportunity to visit the city and attend a traditional religious ceremony.

Festival de Inverno

This Festival has been occurring in Ouro Preto for 50 years, bringing together music shows, theater and circus, exhibitions of art and workshops and various cultural activities.

Festa de Nossa Senhora do Pilar
Place: Matriz do Pilar - Ouro Preto  (15 Aug 2020 )

On this date the faithful of the city come together to celebrate a special Mass for the patron saint, Our Lady of Pillar, who was named after one of the most beautiful Matrix of Ouro Preto. The religious programming is extensive and the time of communion of the faithful is beautiful.

Festa de São Bartolomeu
Place: São Bartolomeu District  (24 Aug 2020 )

The festival begins at dawn with a Mass in honor of the Patron Saint Bartholomew. The city's festivities begin on August 22 and last until the 24th of August, ending with the Blessed Sacrament. In addition to religious programming the district is busy with concerts and activities.

Week of the City - The Anniversary of Ouro Preto
Place: Historic Centre  (01 Sep 2020 - 08 Sep 2020 )

Recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the city has contributed significantly to the history and identity of Brazil, and today is a source of great pride for its inhabitants. To celebrate the anniversary on July 8, the city council, along with partners, promote the city by filling the week with numerous honors and hosting a show in Tiradentes that will be open to the public.

Nossa Senhora do Rosário Festival

Nossa Senhora do Rosário is one of the most important Catholic saints in Brazil and the month of October is totally dedicated to her. This festival goes back 300 years. It was established by slaves and brings together most of the black community of Ouro Preto.

Festa do 12

Festa do 12 happens in the Ouro Preto streets and in the university fraternities. Similar to Carnival, it gathers many people to celebrate and party all day long.
Forum das Letras
Place: Ouro Preto  (11 Nov 2020 - 15 Nov 2020 )

The forum is sponsored by the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), aiming to be an interface for dialogue between authors and audience in a productive environment. According to the designers, the event focuses on promoting the development of identity, diversity and literature produced by the Portuguese-speaking countries.

Semana do Aleijadinho
Place: Historical center  (12 Nov 2020 - 18 Nov 2020 )

Aleijadinho was a famous artist, master architect and sculptor, considered by many to be the most important artist of the Baroque style in Brazil and worldwide. He crafted dozens of churches in Ouro Preto and its districts. His masterpieces include the soapstone statues of the 12 prophets (1800-1805) and 66 figures in cedar (1796) that make up the Via Crucis .
