In colonial times slaves worshiped their own saint, Nossa Senhora do Rosário, since they were not allowed to enter other churches. And October is dedicated to her, with a whole month of celebrations.
This very traditional festival has been celebrated for the past 300 years and it gathers most of the black community of Ouro Preto. It is a mixture of religion and folklore with masses, traditional bands and dances. Many groups throughout town get together to pay homage to the saint.
