Conceived as a pousada focused more on Mariana’s business than its leisure tourists, the Pousada Getsêmani offers simple, comfortable, spotlessly clean, and relatively inexpensive accommodations for guests to return to in the evening for a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast before heading out again in the morning. But new facilities like a deck with swimming pool and additional garden and social spaces reflect a change in vision and were planned to attract more of the leisure tourists who visit Mariana.
The Pousada Getsêmani’s name reflects the host’s desire to offer his guests a peaceful haven. One enters from the street through a garden gate and immediately feels the welcoming shade of the trees surrounding the property. A stone staircase leads to a veranda with a sitting area in front of the lobby and reception area with a living room with sofas and a television for guests’ use. Both host and staff are friendly and helpful with recommendations of what to see and do in Mariana or with arranging transportation, guides, or reservations. Guest rooms are located on two floors with little details like fresh filtered water stations in strategic locations.
A traditional homemade breakfast with a huge variety of baked goods, fruits, juices, local cheese, ham, jams, and more is served in the bright, second-floor breakfast room which offers views of the historic city center.
Gessy Souza, your host, actually never dreamed of owning and operating a pousada. It just sort of evolved. Back in 2005, Gessy built a suite of five rooms above his house as a solution to a business problem. Traveling salesmen from whom he purchased goods for his retail business were often in Mariana and there were very few options for comfortable, inexpensive accommodations. For two years the rooms were only rented to business associates, but they told their family and friends and before too long, Gessy was an innkeeper. A stroke had left him unable to continue running his family business, but welcoming, caring for, and talking with his guests was the perfect solution for him to stay active and interested, while being able to rest and relax a bit. Gessy has since added the 11 current rooms in the newer part of the pousada and is overseeing a third phase which entails a new wing with ten more rooms, a pool with deck, and some more garden space. He believes in the potential of both business and leisure tourism in Mariana and prides himself on offering comfortable, modern, and spotlessly clean accommodations, a peaceful ambience in a garden setting, and excellent customer service to his guests.
