A small bit of the history that has shaped this accommodation is key to helping explain the Pousada Contos de Minas’ mission and philosophy. In 1938, the grandparents of current host, Patrícia Camêllo dos Santos, opened a Rancho de Tropas on this very spot when it was still a rural area of Mariana. It was a stopping point, a provisioning centre, a watering hole, an inn, a meeting place for all, and a centre of communications for the tropeiros with their pack horses and mule-trains, bringing supplies, goods and news to and from Mariana.
Continuing the long-standing tradition, the Camêllo family opened Contos de Minas in 2003 with an aspiration to provide the very same warm welcome, hospitality, good night’s sleep, and hearty food to travellers in the region their grandparents once had to so many of.
Although the façade and entrance to Pousada Contos de Minas are located on a city centre street that can become quite busy during normal business hours, the hotel building extends back from the street with the majority of guestrooms and common spaces well hidden from the hustle and bustle of the busy streets. It actually becomes a very quiet and peaceful area. The reception area, guest living room, computer room, and breakfast room complete with orchidarium windows occupy the ground floor. The social spaces of the pousada are simply decorated with comfortable furniture, accents of local handcrafts, sisal rugs, and polished granite floors. The guest rooms are located above the ground floor on two floors along wide, cool corridors with sitting areas here and there.
